Course Risk Assessment

THE CLUB’S COMPREHENSIVE RISK ASSESSMENT IS AVAILABLE IN THE CLUBHOUSE AND ON THE CLUBS WEBSITE.

ALL MEMBERS SHOULD FAMILARISE THEMSELVES WITH THE RISK ASSESSMENT IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE TABLE BELOW.

IF ANY DOUBT EXISTS AS TO ANY ASSESSED RISK AND SOLUTIONS TO IDENTIFIED RISKS THEN THESE ARE TO BE CONVEYED TO THE CLUB OFFICE FOR CLARIFICATION.

This risk assessment covers the main hazards associated with the golf course, primarily from the golfer’s perspective.

The hazard profile attached shows hazards are specific to particular areas of the course and grounds. In an emergency, call the golf club 02891 270 368 opt 2. A list of certified first aiders can be found in the clubhouse reception area.

8 Miss hit approach shot to green Players on adjacent holes Be aware of players in this area and shout fore if hitting to left or right past green and there is any likelihood of hitting someone Medium
9 Streams and deep ditches All golfers Be aware of the dangers of the streams on the course including slipping down banks, high drops, deep water and slippery bridges. Don't step onto frozen water. Use ball retrievers whenever possible. Appropriate holes 3, 10, 13, 14, 17, 18 Medium
10 Hidden Greens Other golfers, Greens Staff Don't play to greens until you are sure that the group in front have left. Greens that may be hidden from view for approach shot are holes 5,6,7,10,12, 14,16 Medium
11 Hidden Tees Other golfers, Greens Staff Some adjacent tees may be hidden from view when playing drives or approach shots. If you believe there is a danger of your shot striking someone then wait until that tee clears. Appropriate hidden tees are 2 (from 1st), 6 (from 5 if beneath hill), 11 (from 10), 14 (from 13) Medium
12 Trees and other fixed hazards Golfers and playing partners When playing near trees beware of balls ricocheting Medium
13 Undulating ground, hollows and hills Golfers Take care when walking over undulating ground especially when wet or icy. This affects all holes on the golf course but particularly the first nine holes. 15 Bunkers Golfers Some bunkers on the course are relatively deep and care should be taken when entering and exiting bunkers. Golfers should also be aware of balls rebounding off the face of the bunker Low
16 Winter mats Golfers During the winter months (November to March) winter mats may be in play. Golfers should ensure that they have a good stance before hitting the ball, which would prevent slipping. On occasions grounds staff will treat the mats with de-icing agent to prevent accidents/slipping. Low
17 Practice area (rear of 10th fairway) Golfers, members of public and people in adjacent houses Golfers have a restricted area to practice and must not hit a ball knowing that it may go outside that area. Golfers must also be particularly aware of adjacent public path and adjacent houses in deciding the type of shot to practice. Golfers practicing must also be aware of golfers playing the 10th hole. Specific Risks By Hole        
Hole 1        
18 Shot played over Railway tracks Passengers on Train Golfer should wait for Trains to pass before hitting their Tee Shot. Should the ball look to travel over the boundary to the train track then golfers should shout Fore immediately. Low
19 Shot played to the left of 1st Fairway Golfers approaching 4th and Golfers on the 2nd Tee If shot looks to be travelling to the left of 1st Fairway then shout 'Fore left' immediately. This should be shouted on all occasions as you may not be able to see golfers in the trees to the left or behind the trees on the 2nd Tee Medium
Hole 2        
20 Shot played to the left of 2nd Fairway Golfers on practice area or approaching on 4th fairway If shot looks to be travelling to the left of 2nd Fairway then shout 'Fore left' immediately. This should be shouted on all occasions as you may not be able to see golferson practice area, in the trees or to the left or beyond the trees walking up the 4th. Medium
21 Steep bank behind 2nd green Golfers Beware of steep bank to rear of green. Also take care walking from the 2nd to 3rd tee. Again there is a steep hill - use path and handrail provided. Medium
Hole 3        
22 Blind Tee recessed Golfers On approaching the 3rd Tee always stop before reaching the Tee to the right and check if golfers are playing shots as they may be blind to you on approach Low
Hole 4 (new layout 1/4/23)      
23 Shot played to the left of 4th Fairway Golfers playing at practice area, 2nd and 1st If shot looks to be travelling to the left of 4th Fairway then shout 'Fore left' immediately. This should be shouted on all occasions as you may not be able to see golfers playing either at the practice area, 2nd or 1st holes . From men's white tees always aim towards the marker post to the side of the ladies / green teebox. Medium
24 Shot played to the right of the 4th Fairway Golfers playing the 5th & 6th If shot looks to be travelling to the right of 4th Fairway then shout 'Fore right' immediately. This should be shouted on all occasions as you may not be able to see golfers playing either the 5th & 6th hole Medium
25 Caution on approach to green - give way to players playing tee shot from 5th Golfers On approach to 4th green be aware of players teeing off from the 5th. If necessary stand to the left and allow them to play Drives. Do not approach green when players are driving off the 5th tee Medium
Hole 5        
26 Shot played to the right of the 5th Fairway Golfers playing the 4th If shot looks to be travelling to the right of 5th Fairway then shout 'Fore right' immediately. This should be shouted on all occasions. Medium
27 Shot played to the left of the 5th Fairway Golfers playing the 8th If shot looks to be travelling to the left of 5th Fairway then shout 'Fore left' immediately. This should be shouted on all occasions as you may not be able to see golfers playing either the 8th Medium
28 Approach shot played to the 5th green veering to the left Golfers teeing off on the 6th Golfers teeing off on the 6th may be blind to you playing your approach to the 5th green. Should your shot veer to the left of the 5th fairway on approach please shout 'Fore left' even if you cannot directly see golfers - they may be obscured by the dip you are playing from or by the trees around the 6th tee. Medium
29 Give way to players playing off 6th Tee Golfers Always allow golfers to tee off the 6th before approaching the green as dependant on the 6th tee in use the 5th green can be directly in tee-shot line Medium
Hole 6        
30 Blind tee shot - Always await bell before teeing off Golfers playing the 6th Tee is blind given ridge in front of it - always await clear bell ring before teeing off. Similarly on having completed approach shots - on making your way to the green please sound the bell which is located on the pedestrian pathway down the hill - between the trees. Medium
31 Blind approach to the green Golfers on 6th green Green is blind on approach shot - always walk forward to ensure green has cleared before playing approach shots. Low
32 Steep Approach Hill to Green Golfers The approach to 6th green has a steep hill. Walking golfers should use the sign-posted pathway to the left before the trees. Take care to use the handrail provided. Buggy golfers should use the sign-posted buggy path to the right at the top of the hill. The hill is steep - please avoid walking down this. High
Hole 7        
33 Tee shot played to the right - possibly leaving the boundary of the course Pedestrians on coastal path Should a ball look to be travelling to the right / leaving the boundary of the course from a wayward tee shot immediately shout 'Fore right' Medium
34 Steep Hill Golfers The fairway on the 7th contains a steep hill. Both walking and buggy golfers should always use the path provided and should not walk up this hill. Should your ball land on the hill - you should assess the risk of playing the shot and only do so if you are confident you can safely access the area, play your shot with a good stance and safely exit the hill. You should play particular notice to weather and underfoot conditions. Should you decide that it is not safe play then you should take an unplayable penalty drop as with any other shot deemed unplayable. High
Hole 8        
35 Tee or approach shot moving left towards 6th Tee or 5th Fairway Golfers playing 5th or 6th If shot looks to be travelling to the left of 8th Fairway then shout 'Fore left' immediately. This should be shouted on all occasions as you may not be able to see golfers playing either the 5th or 6th Medium
Hole 9        
36 Steep approach to Tee Golfers Please take care moving towards the 9th Tee. Walking golfers should follow the path and Buggy golfers follow the signed path at the top of the hill following it around to the 9th Tee Medium
37 Tee shot played to the right - possibly leaving the boundary of the course Pedestrians on coastal path Should a tee-shot move severely to the right and look to be in danger of leaving the course boundary to the right shout 'Fore On The Path ' immediately Medium
38 Shot played long - possibly leaving the boundary of the course Pedestrians on coastal path Should a tee-shot look to be long and in danger of leaving the course boundary behind the green then shout 'Fore behind the Green' immediately Medium
39 Shot hit severely left and long - possibly travelling towards the clubhouse or car park Members / Visitors around the clubhouse vicinity Should a tee-shot look to be travelling left and in danger of leaving the course boundary - hitting the vicinity of the clubhouse / car park then shout 'Fore Left ' immediately Medium
Hole 10        
40 Tee shot played to the right - possibly leaving the boundary of the course Pedestrians on woodland path adjacent to course Should a tee-shot move severely to the right and look to be in danger of leaving the course boundary to the right shout 'Fore On The Path' immediately Medium
41 Tee shot played to the left over the out of bounds Golfers ahead on either the 10th trees just beyond Out of Bounds (who would not be visible) or on 11th tee box who would equally not be visible Should a tee-shot look to be travelling left and in danger of hitting the 11th Tee or carrying beyond the out of bounds over the corner then shout 'Fore Left ' immediately Medium
Hole 11        
42 Tee shot hit to the right Golfers on 15th tee or moving down the hill / path on the 15th - Golfers on the 15th have priority. Should a tee-shot move severely to the right shout 'Fore Right' immediately Medium
43 Tee shot or approach shot hit long Golfers on or leaving 12th Tee Should a Tee-shot or approach shot be hit long and loom to be moving through the green shore 'Fore' immediately Medium
Hole 12        
44 Take care when teeing off that other golfers will not cross your path from 14th green to 15th tee Golfers leaving 14th and moving to 15th Always ensure that no golfers are about to cross from 14th green before playing your shot Low
45 Tee Shot - green must be clear Golfers ahead on 12th hole Do not play tee-shot if you are attempting to hit the green by carrying the Out-of-bounds unless you are absolutely clear that the golfers in front have finished the hole  
46 Tee shot or approach shot played to the right - possibly leaving the boundary of the course Members of public in houses or their gardens Should a tee-shot / approach-shot move severely to the right and look to be in danger of leaving the course boundary to the right shout 'Fore Right' immediately Medium
47 Approach shot long and to the left Golfers on 13th tee Should approach shot look long and to the left then shout 'Fore left' immediately Medium
Hole 13        
48 Tee shot played to the right - possibly leaving the boundary of the course Members of public in houses or their gardens Should a tee-shot / approach-shot move severely to the right and look to be in danger of leaving the course boundary to the right shout 'Fore In The House ' immediately Medium
49 Tee shot to left or long on the hole Golfers on 14th tee or 17th Tee box areas Should tee shot be travelling left or long then shout Fore immediately Medium
Hole 14        
50 Tee shot played to right of 14th Fairway Golfers playing to the right of the 16th Should tee shot be travelling right then shout 'Fore Right' immediately Medium
51 Tee shot played to left of 14th Fairway Golfers on 13th tee Should tee shot be travelling left then shout 'Fore Left' immediately Medium
52 Care must be taken in crossing the 12th Fairway towards the 15th tee Golfers Look to your right at intersection with 12th Hole. Stop if necessary and give way to players playing tee shots from 12th . Wait until all have played before moving to cross the fairway towards 15th tee Low
Hole 15        
53 Tee shot payed to left of 15th Fairway Golfers on or leaving 11th Tee Should tee shot be travelling left then shout 'Fore Left' immediately Medium
54 Tee shot played to right of 15th Fairway Golfers on or around 16th Tee Should tee shot be travelling right then shout 'Fore Right' immediately Medium
55 Take care on the hill and beware of golfers playing up the 11th Golfers On making your way down the hill always take care to ensure that you will not cross golfers playing from the the 11th Tee on your left  
Hole 16        
56 Tee shot payed to left of 16th Fairway Golfers on the 18th hole Should tee shot be travelling left then shout 'Fore Left' immediately Medium
57 Tee shot played to right of 16th Fairway Golfers on or around 12th tee Should tee shot be travelling right then shout 'Fore Right' immediately Medium
58 Approach shot played to right of 16th Green Golfers on 14th fairway Should tee shot be travelling right then shout 'Fore Right' immediately Medium
  Approach shot played long of 16th green Golfers on or around 14th tee / fairway Should tee shot be travelling long of the green then shout 'Fore' immediately Medium
Hole 17        
59 Tee shot played to the right - possibly leaving the boundary of the course Members of public on wooded path to the right of 17th hole Should a tee-shot / approach-shot move severely to the right and look to be in danger of leaving the course boundary to the right shout 'Fore Right' immediately Medium
60 Deep banked stream to the right of the hole Golfers Golfers should pay particluar caution to the stream which borders the right of the fairway with the boundary fo the course - this is deep and has very steep sides - we woulld strongly advise not to enter this stream to colelct your ball -rather treat it as a lost ball in water hazard  
61 Tee shot striking trees to the left Golfers on or around 17th green Should tee shot be travelling towards trees on the left (off medal tee) then shout 'Fore Left' immediately Medium
Hole 18        
62 Tee shot played to left of 18th fairway Golfers on the 16th fairway Should tee shot be travelling left then shout 'Fore Left' immediately Medium
63 Approach shot played to left of 18th green Golfers on or around the 16th tee Should tee shot be travelling left then shout 'Fore Left' immediately Medium
Practice Area        
64 Being Hit by a ball whilst getting to the practice Area Persons approaching practice area to practice could be struck by a ball from players on 1st / 2nd or 4th holes Access to Practice Area is via 2 routes - (1) if available play 1st, 2nd and possibly 3rd holes to gain access to Practice Area. Also if available play 4th hole to access back to clubhouse. (2) Non Playing access is via pathway to to right of 1st hole and 2nd hole before crossing 2nd fairway to the practice area - using this route you must always stay behind players playing 1st and only cross the fairway on 2nd when no-one is on the tee-box for 2nd hole. Return route is walking behind players playing the 4th to return to clubhouse  
65 Being hit by an errant shot whilst on the practice area played from either 2nd or 4th hole. A very poor shot from 2nd or 4th could stray to practice ground Play to the two practice target greens must only be from the marked tee-boxes - no chipping is allowed arong these greens - time at these greens is limited to retrieval of practice balls played towards the target greens. Once balls collected you must immediately return to practice tee or practice green area. Close quarter chipping is allowed to the dedicated practice green (the one with the bunker)  
66 Being hit by another player on the practice area A poor shot from another player practicing Play from the practice teeboxes is not permitted whilst someone is practicing in the area to the right. Two players can use the practice tee side by side when no-one is using the practice green to the right. The player who was there first has priority - i.e. if player practicing at green then anyone wanting to use tee-boxes must wait until that player has finished practicing.
